Writer and Editor
Rachel Gallaher is an arts and lifestyle writer and editor living in Seattle, Washington. Her work has appeared in the following publications: Architectural Digest, Architectural Record, Dwell, Seattle Magazine, Azure, Luxe, Austin Home, Kinfolk, Surface, the Seattle Times, Alaska Airlines' Beyond, University of Washington Magazine, and the award-winning GRAY (where she was one of the founding editors). Currently, Rachel runs the design section of Robb Report and freelances on the side.
Rachel is the recipient of numerous journalistic awards, including, most recently, The Society of Professional Journalists Region 10 Excellence Awards 2023, Second Place in Magazines: Personal Profile, for her story “He Can Dig It,” in the University of Washington Magazine. She won the same award in 2021 for her profile of pro-football player-turned-mountain-climber Mark Pattison, as well as first place in the Magazines: Arts & Culture Category for “Voice of Resistance,” written about native Alaskan artist Nicholas Galanin.
In 2008 Rachel won the Nature of Words Rising Star Creative Writing Competition in the ages 19-25 Fiction category for her story "The Circus." She has received scholarships to retreats through the prestigious Hedgebrook organization and has two poems published in the 2008 and 2009 editions of the University of Washington's InterSECTIONS interdisciplinary journal. She is also a recipient of the 2015 Folio Magazine 30 Under 30 Award and received the Honorable Mention award in the Arts & Entertainment category of the Society for Features Journalism 2020 Excellence in Features awards for her 2019 cover story “A Modern Medici.”
Rachel is particularly interested in the places where art, design, architecture, and culture intersect, and the buildings, projects, and ideas that come from those interactions.
